Wrestlers to compete for spot at NCAA Division III national championships

Three Connecticut wrestlers have earned No. 1 seeds for this weekend’s NCAA Division III Northeast Regional championship meet at Springfield College along four wrestlers from No. 5 Coast Guard.

Seventeen teams will be in the event with the top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes earning a berth to the NCAA Division III national championship meet on March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids. Iowa.

Berlin’s Nick Arborio, a senior at Western New England University, has earned a No. 1 seed at 125 pounds, Glastonbury’s Joseph Rossetti, a senior at Williams College, is the top seed at 141 pounds while senior Michael Ross of Stratford and Foran High, is the No. 1 seed at 174 pounds for defending regional champion Johnson & Wales.

No. 12 Johnson & Wales have won the last four Northeast Regional championships. The 2021 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coast Guard’s Tony Ulasak (149 pounds, 13-0), Phil Rogers (165, 5-0), Paul Detwiler (184, 15-0) and Coy Spooner (197, 19-0) earned top seeds in the tournament. Coast Guard is trying to claim their first Northeast Region title. The Bears finished second behind Johnson & Wales in 2019 and 2020.

Arborio won a Northeast Regional championship in 2020 for Western New England and is 14-2 on the year with three pins. Ross is undefeated at 31-0 this year for Johnson & Wales with two pins. Ross leads the entire nation (Division I, II and III) in tech falls with 19.
