WORCESTER, February 25 — Johnson & Wales junior 125-pounder Jay Albis was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and two teammates claimed individual titles to lift the Wildcats to the team championship at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional hosted by WPI.
JWU racked up an impressive 156½ points to capture their second straight Northeast Regional championship. Second through sixth place was separated by just a total of 5½ points with WPI finishing second with 92½ points followed by Wesleyan (91½), New York University (89), Southern Maine (88) and Roger Williams (87).
The top three in each weight class advance to the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 in Cleveland, Ohio, while the top six earned all-region recognition.
Wesleyan’s Devon Carillo (197) of Middletown and Isaiah Bellamy (285) of Norwich won regional championships to lead the Cardinals. Windsor Locks’ Khamri Thomas (184) won a championship for Johnson and Walks along with teammate Joseph Ferindle (141). New Fairfield’s Taylor Shay of Roger Williams won his first Northeast Regional title with a victory at 165 pounds.
No. 24 Coast Guard had a team-record four wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division III nationals with sophomore Owen McClave (133), junior Nick Remke (165), sophomore A.J. Aeberli (174) and freshman Jonathan Wagner (197) earning invitations. Aeberli lost in the finals, dropping a 9-7 decision to Malik Settles of New England College after a review with three seconds left, but he still earned his first-ever NCAA berth. McClave, Remke and Wagner each finished third.
Trinity College had one wrestler earn an NCAA Division III tournament berth. Junior captain Grant Sorenson took third at 149 pounds.
