PROVIDENCE, R.I., March 1, 2020 – Seven Connecticut natives have qualified to participate in the NCAA Division III national wrestling championships on March 13-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Berlin’s Nick Aborio of Western New England University earned a NCAA Division III tournament bid by winning the Northeast Regional title at 125 pounds at Sunday’s NCAA Div. 3 Northeast Regional championships. Glastonbury native Joseph Rossetti of Williams College earned a bid with a second place finish at 141 pounds. The top three finishers in each weight class earned an automatic to the nationals.
Former Fairfield Warde wrestler Izaake Zuckerman (174) of New York University, former Montville High star Noah Caskey (141) of the Coast Guard and former Bristol Central grappler Chris Trelli (133) of Springfield College also qualified. Each finished third in their respective weight classes at the Northeast Regional.
At the Southeast Regional in Grantham, Pa., Washington and Lee University sophomore Ryan Luth (157) earned a berth to the national championship by winning a regional title with four straight wins. Luth, a sophomore who wrestled at Foran in Milford, beat Dylan Van Sickel of Stevens in the title match, 15-8.
Luth had two technical falls and a pin in the tournament, too, as Washington and Lee finished second in the regional tournament.
At the Mideast Regional, Muhlenberg senior Austin Sherman (149) earned his first NCAA tournament invitation by finishing third with a pair of wins on Sunday, including a 6-4 win over a wrestler that beat him on Saturday. Sherman, who won four in a row to take third place, picked up his 100th career win in the consolation final. Sherman wrestled at Fairfield Ludlowe.
With six wrestlers qualifying for the nationals, No. 8 Johnson & Wales beat No. 10 Coast Guard, 168 to 122½ at Rhode Island College to win their fourth straight Northeast Regional championship. New York University was third with 122.
Coast Guard, which finished second for the second consecutive season, is also sending six wrestlers to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Philip Rogers (165), Paul Detwiler (184) and Jon Wagner (197) all won regional championships. AJ Aeberli (174) and Patrick Irwin (275) placed second while Caskey won three matches on Sunday to place third and earn an NCAA bid.
Caskey (141) won an 8-3 decision over Nick Wagner from Roger Williams in his first consolation match of the day before beating Nathan Lackman from Rhode Island College 2-1 to earn his spot in the third place match against Max Tempel from Castleton, who beat Caskey 3-1 in OT on Saturday. Caskey turned the tables, beating Tempel 3-1 to earn his NCAA spot.
Aborio is 21-0 at 125 pounds won his first regional championship with a 6-4 win over Southern Maine’s Peter Del Gallo. He went 4-0 in the tournament with an 18-0 tech fall win over Plymouth State’s Will Jarvis, a quarterfinal win over Wesleyan’s Amir Daouk and a 7-1 win over NYU’s Tyler Crew in the semifinals.
Rossetti, a junior captain, lost in the finals at 141 pounds to top-seeded Jordan Robinson of Johnson & Wales, 8-5. “Joey wrestled well in the semis and finals, and we will spend some time working on opening his offense up before we head to Iowa next week,” Williams coach Scott Honecker said.
Back-to-back pins in around a minute put Rossetti into the semifinals match against Max Tempei from Castleton University. Rossetti had defeated Tempei for the first time a few weeks ago and he repeated past history in the semifinal with a grueling 2-0 decision. The match kept Rossetti, the No. 2 seed at 141, undefeated at the tournament, clinched a ticket to nationals, and put him contention for the regional championship.
Zuckerman had a pair of wins on Sunday to finish third and qualify for the nationals. He beat Roger Williams’ Brett Leonard, 8-1 in the consolation final.
Trelli beat Wesleyan’s Tristan Stetson, 7-4 in the third place bout to earn a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Wesleyan’s Marco Gaita (174) won a Northeast Regional title for the Cardinals with a 3-2 decision over Coast Guard’s A.J. Aeberli. In the first round, Gaita pinned Raul Gierbolini of Southern Maine in 3:54.
