The Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team will be sending four wrestlers to the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Coalition national championship meet on March 4-5 in Adrian, Michigan.

Freshman Ashley Reed (191), Madison Sandquist (143), Jacklyn Smith (170) and Temi Sanusi (143) earned bids to the national tournament by finishing in the top five of their respective weight classes at the Northeast Regional Sunday in Erie, Pa., on the campus of Gannon University.

Reed, the freshman from Southington, had three pins and four victories to win the Northeast Regional championship while Sandquist and Smith each finished second. Sanusi went 3-2 in the tournament and finished fifth to secure her invitation to the national tournament.

As a team, No. 14 Sacred Heart finished sixth with 73½ points. The Pioneers had just six wrestlers entered into the tournament. No. 8 Tiffin (Ohio) University won the regional tournament for the second straight season with a 165-128 win over No. 9 Adrian College.

Reed (16-3) beat Elmira’s Tayana Labady by technical fall in her first match and pinned Gannon’s Danielle Morales in 1:58 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Reed pinned Yamilex Perez from Adrian in 31 seconds and beat No. 7 Sandra Guerrero of New Jersey City University for the third time this season, 4-3, to win the title.

Sandquist, the freshman from Humble, Texas, pinned Adrian’s Jasmine Hale in her first match in 1:42 and got her eighth pin of the season by pinning Elmira’s Lesile Monterrosa in 1:37 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Sandquist beat Gannon’s Stephanie Floor, 15-6.

But in the final, East Strousberg’s Avia Bibeau pinned Sandquist in 42 seconds to win the regional championship. Sandquist is 21-6 on the season at 143 pounds.

Smith (12-8) moved into the championship match at 170 pounds by beating No. 4 seed Hazel Dahlquist of Elmira, 6-2 and by pinning Adrian’s Kayley Rada in 4:46 in the semifinals. But Smith, the Bridgeport native who was unseeded in the tournament, was stopped in the finals by Adrian’s Aspen Dodge, 11-4.

Each of the 12 teams was allowed to enter two wrestlers in a single weight class – although just one would score team points. Temi Sanusi, the freshman from Houston, wrestled at 143 for the Pioneers and went 3-2 to earn a bid to the national tournament.

Sanusi lost her first match to Bibeau, the eventual regional champion, 12-2 before beating East Stroubsburg’s Rachel Degiulio, 13-1 and Adrian’s Jasmine Hale, 4-1. Sanusi lost a consolation semifinal but went to the fifth place bout with a chance to earn a ticket to the nationals. She beat Tiffin’s Sidney Ramos, 4-1.

Two other Sacred Heart wrestlers were in the tournament. Tays Pascual (136) went 1-2 while Savannah Vanase (136) and Ayeska Zanetti (130) each went 0-2.
