American International College and All-American wrestler Jo Jo Gonzalez (Willimantic/Ellis Tech) will competing Saturday in the NCAA Super Region I tournament at the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown, Pa.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division II national championships in St. Louis on March 11-12.
The Super Region I tournament will feature five nationally ranked teams including Gannon and Mercyhurst, which are tied for No. 15, No. 18 Kutztown University, No. 19 Pitt-Johnstown, and No. 24 AIC.
Nineteen of the nation’s top-ranked individuals will be battling for a spot in the NCAA Division II national championships including top-ranked Andrew Dunn, Jr. (Kutztown, 285 lbs.)., third-ranked Joel Leise (Gannon, 197 lbs.), and fourth-ranked Jacob Robb (Mercyhurst, 285 lbs.).
AIC’s Sean Johnson (Ashford/Ellis tech) is ranked No. 8 in the country at 141 pounds while Gonzalez, is ranked No. 9 at 157. Johnson and Gonazalez are the No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes.
Gonzalez will be looking for his third straight Super Region I title. He won at 157 pounds in 2020 and captured a second Super Region I crown at year ago at 165. Gonzalez finished seventh at the national championships to earn All-America honors.
Johnson finished fourth at the Super Region I tournament a year ago.
