Springfield College didn’t have a single regional champion but had six wrestlers qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division III national championship tournament as the Pride won their first NCAA Division III regional championship Saturday at the Coast Guard Academy in New London.

Springfield won the newly-named Region 1 championship, outlasting Williams College, 170½ to 155 despite six NCAA qualifiers for Williams, too. The tournament was previously known as the NCAA Northeast Regional.

Host Coast Guard finished third with 152½ points and had six NCAA qualifiers and three regional champions. Trinity and Wesleyan each had one NCAA qualifier while Killingly’s Jack Richardson of Johnson & Wales earned a spot in the NCAA tournament by winning a regional championship at 165 pounds.

Nate Fitt (149), Gabe Monroe (197) and Carl DiGiorgio (285) won regional titles for Coast Guard while teammates Nikko Beato (125, 3rd), Marvin Armstead (133, 2nd) and Caden Stout (184, 3rd) earned NCAA bids.

Williams’ Caleb Seyfried earned a NCAA bid by finishing second at 149 pounds while Williams’ Peter Kane won his third regional championship at 157 pounds and earned his fourth NCAA championship berth.

Seyfried and Kane both wrestled at Greens Farms Academy. Seyfried is from Westport while Kane is from Fairfield.

Trinity’s Ty Trickle, who finished third at 141 pounds, and Wesleyan’s Hayden Meyers, who won a regional title at 141 pounds, also secured NCAA tournament berths.
