MIDDLETOWN, March 2, 2025 – With four individual champions and six finalists, Johnson and Wales won their first NCAA Division III Northeast Regional championship since 2020 in the Bacon Field House on Sunday at Wesleyan.
Seven Wildcat wrestlers finished in the top three of their respective weight classes to earn automatic berths to the 2025 NCAA Division III national championships on March 14-15 in Providence.
Johnson & Wales beat Coast Guard for the championship, 192½ to 155. Vermont State-Castleton was third with 151½ points.
Coast Guard had two individual champions and four qualifiers for the NCAA nationals, including defending national champion Chase Randall, who another Northeast Regional title at 133.
Host Wesleyan was fifth for their best regional finish since taking third in 2018. The Cardinals had two qualifiers for the nationals, including Milford’s C.J. Shea, who won at 165 pounds and was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.
Four wrestlers with roots in the states also finished in the top three to earn berths at the NCAA Div. III nationals in Providence. Williams’ Peter Kane (157), Western New England’s Cam Hines (174) each won their respective weight classes, Johnson and Wales’ Jack Richardson (165) finished second with Castleton’s Elijah Cyr (149) finishing third.
Johnson & Wales was led by Hayden Brown (149), who won his fourth straight Northeast Region title with a 11-0 win over Southern Maine’s Colby Frost with Wildcat teammate Joziah Fry (125), winning a third straight Northeast Region title.
Randall, who is from Spokane, Washington, won his championship bout with a 4-1 win over Peyton Ellis (133) of Johnson and Wales thanks to a takedown in the final minute. It was a battle of the two top ranked wrestlers in the nation. Randall is ranked No. 1 with Ellis at No. 2
Coast Guard’s other win came from Carl DiGiorgio (Doylestown, PA), who won a Northeast Regional title with an 8-6 win over Castleton’s Evan Day. DiGiorgio got a takedown with 1:26 remaining to take the lead for good.
Junior Jacob Woodburn (157) finished third with a 3-0 win over Roger Williams’ Matt Lucas to qualify for the nationals.

Wesleyan’s C.J. Shea (165), who lives in Milford and wrestled at Westport’s Greens Farms Academy, got a takedown in the final seconds to beat Johnson & Wales’ Jack Richardson, 5-4 to win his first regional championship.
He is the first Wesleyan wrestler to win a regional championship since since Marco Gaita in 2020.
Shea (33-1) beat Richardson, who lives in Danielson and wrestled at Killingly.
Wesleyan’s Hayden Myers (141) finished third with a 13-9 win over Southern Maine’s Kyle Moore in a thrilling match. Myers trailed 9-4 in the third period before scoring nine unanswered points with an escape, a go-ahead takedown and a near fall for the win.
Wesleyan’s Aris Dashiell (197) won his consolation semifinal match with Roger Williams’ Spencer Fetrow with a takedown in triple overtime to get a shot at qualifying for the nationals in the consolation final. But, Castleton’s Haven Taratek got a takedown in overtime to finish third with a 4-1 decision.
Williams junior Peter Kane (157) won his second consecutive Northeast Regional title with a 8-0 win over Castleton’s Nate Camiscioli. Kane, who lives in Fairfield and wrestled at GFA, beat Roger Williams’ Matt Lucas, 7-0 in the semifinals.
Hines, who wrestled at Haddam-Killingworth, won his first Northeast Regional title for Western New England University with a 15-2 win over Springfield’s Nick Rogers in the final at 174 pounds.
Against Rogers, Hines led right from the start with a takedown and never looked back, becoming the first Golden Bear since 2022 to reach the NCAA nationals. Hines, who is a senior, went 4-0 with a pin, a major decision and two victories.
Cyr, a graduate student from Middletown, was one of eight Vermont State-Castleton wrestlers to secure bids to the NCAA Division III tournament. Cyr beat Williams’ Caleb Seyfried (Westport, GFA) to finish third with takedown with 40 seconds left in regulation to secure a 4-1 victory.
