UConn’s club wrestling team had three individual champions at Saturday’s National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Northeast Regional in Springfield, Mass., and qualified 11 wrestlers to compete in the upcoming national tournament in Louisiana.

Host Springfield Technical Community College won the regional tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years. The tournament was cancelled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UConn senior Martial Sutton of Glastonbury won at 141 pounds with a 2-0 win over Justin Drovak of Stony Brook with freshmen Marcus Cavallo of Stratford (133) and Victor Petkov of Ridgefield (285) also winning individual championships. Hayden Lewandoski of Terryville finished second at 125 pounds for the Huskies.

The top six finishers in each weight class are eligible to compete in the NCWA national championship meet on March 13-15 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

As a team UConn finished fifth in the Northeast Regional. They have finished second three times recently in 2023, 2020 and 2019.

The club is still raising money needed to travel to the national championship meet. You can make a donation through their GoFundMe fundraiser.

The UConn club team has been in existence since 2007. UConn dropped their varsity wrestling program following the 1981 season.

The NCWA was founded in 1997 to provide collegiate athletes with an opportunity to compete in wrestling at a regional and national level. The NCWA helps develop programs under the school’s athletic departments, student services department and sport club departments.
