With four individual champions, the Coast Guard Academy won their second NCAA Division III Northeast Regional in three years on Sunday at WPI in Worcester, Mass.

The Bears needed championship match victories from Coy Spooner (197) and Carl Digiorgio (285) in the final two bouts of the tournament to secure a four-point win over defending regional champion Johnson and Wales, 193½-189½.

Nate Fitt (149) and Chase Randall (133) also won regional championships for Coast Guard (12-2) with Steven Rochard (165) and Joe Chapman (174) each finishing second.

The Bears had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division III national championship tournament on March 15-16 at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

Two other Connecticut wrestlers qualified for the national tournament. Williams’ Peter Kane of Fairfield (157) qualified along with Johnson & Wale’s Ryan DeVivo of Berlin (184). The top three wrestlers in each weight class qualified.

Spooner (15-0) won his third consecutive NCAA Division III Northeast Regional title with his 2-0 win over Johnson and Wales’ Dylan Harr in the finals at 197 pounds.

DiGiorgio (20-0) won his first regional title with a 12-0 win at 285 pounds over Reid Garrison of Merchant Marine Academy.
