Springfield Technical CC wins NWCA Northeast Regional title

Two Connecticut wrestlers earned spots for the upcoming National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) tournament in Louisiana by finishing in the top four of their respective weight class at the Northeast Regional championship tournament at RPI in Troy, N.Y., on March 2.

Torrington’s Mark Zavatkay won the 125-pound weight class and New Britain’s Shendell James finished fourth at 285 to help Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) win their seventh consecutive Northeast Region championship since 2017. STCC beat UMass, 181-130 with Northeastern finishing third in the field of 10 teams. Yale took ninth.

Including Zavatkay, five STCC wrestlers won their respective weight class including Matthew Clayton (133) of Plymouth, Mass., Spencer Multimore (141) of West Springfield, Mass., Justin Barr (149) of West Orange, N.J., and Jolan Matori (165) of Springfield, Mass.

Justin Perez (165) of Holyoke, Mass., and Johnny Andre (184) of Highstown, N.J. each finished second for STCC.
