
Xavier’s Raekwon Shabazz, a two-time New England champion, is the state wrestler of the year as voted by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
Xavier High senior Raekwon Shabazz was named Connecticut’s high school wrestler of the year by state coaches at the annual Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s annual All-State banquet Tuesday night at the Aqua Turf in Southington.
Newtown’s Chris Bray and Tom Maurath were named the coach of the year and assistant coach of the year, respectively. The Nighthawks finished second in Class L, their best finish in a state championship meet since 1980 and took second at the State Open. Xavier, which won the Class L and State Open title, was named team of the year.
All-State honors were presented to boys in Class LL, L, M and S along with girls who participated in the CIAC Girls Invitational. Five athletes were also honored with Academic All-State honors.
Shabazz, a two-time New England champion, went 42-0 this season, winning the State Open, Class L and Southern Connecticut Conference championships at 113 pounds. He went 51-3 as a junior at 106 pounds and has a career record of 138-11.
Shabazz was the fourth Xavier wrestler to win a State Open championship and the first since 2013.
