Fairfield Warde’s Will Ebert was named the state wrestler of the year in balloting by Connecticut’s high school wrestling coaches.
Ebert finished undefeated in New England with a 45-0 record at 170 pounds. The senior, who will attend Binghamton University in the fall, won the Class LL, State Open and New England championships this winter.
More than 50 wrestlers in Class LL, L, M and S earned All-State honors from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) by winning their respective state championship meets. Ten girls were recognized with All-State honors after winning their respective weight classes at the CIAC’s girls state championship meet.

Two weeks after winning state wrestler of the year honors, Ebert won his first national championship by winning the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Senior Division tournament at 160 pounds.
The top-seeded Ebert (51-0) had five pins in six matches and gave up just one point at the national tournament – a second period escape in a third round victory. Ebert won the national title with a pin of Florida’s Jonathan Ley in just a minute.
Ebert is the third Fairfield wrestler to win wrestler of the year honors. Lee Mannion (135) from Fairfield High won in 2002 along with Charles Kane of Fairfield Warde in 2105.
Ebert was also named state wrestler of the year by GameTimeCT, the chain of print and online print publications in southern Connecticut.
Four coaches were selected as CHSCA state coaches of the year – East Hartford’s Todd Albert (Class LL), Xavier’s Mike Cunningham (Class L), Branford’s Kevin Kapushinski (Class M) and Haddam-Killingworth’s Nick Adler. (Class S).
It was the fifth time that Cunningham was received the award.

Small won for the third straight year, excluding 2021 when the season was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Xavier (11-1) was named team of the year for the first time since 2012. The Falcons won their third straight Class L championship and won their first State Open title since 2012. Xavier finished second at the New England tournament, their best-ever finish at the event.
