Stratford’s Kayla Batres and Ledyard’s Tatianna Irizarry each won national championships at the Prep School national championships on Saturday on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
Batres, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country, of Greens Farms Academy won at 114 pounds while Irizarry, who competes at Choate Rosemary Hall, won at 120 pounds.
Irizarry’s teammate Sara McLaughlin also won her first national title with a victory at 126 pounds as Choate Rosemary Hall finished second in the tournament behind Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Seminary.
Wyoming Seminary had six individual champions and scored a tournament-record 191½ points to win their first national championship while Choate Rosemary Hall finished with a team record 157½ points and nine wrestlers finishing in the top four of their respective weight class.
Southbury’s Sarah Henckel, wrestling for New Jersey’s Blair Academy, was looking for her fourth national championship but she was upset in the finals by Alexis Penley of Wyoming Seminary, 9-4.
Batres went 4-0 with two pins (16 seconds, 32 seconds) to win her national championship. She beat Kirra Mitchell of Mount de Sales Academy in the semifinals, 9-1 before beating Choate Rosemary Hall’s Lily Nunez in the finals, 10-0.
Batres is now a three-time All-American after finishing second at 107 in 2024 and 2025.
Irizzary went 4-0 with three pins in the tournament including a 55 second pin over Caitlin O’Reilly of New Hampshire’s St. Paul School in the championship final. Irizzary is a two-time All-American after finishing third at 114 a year ago.
McLaughlin, who is from Scuitate, Mass., became a three-time All-American with her championship win at 126. McLaughlin was 4-0 with four pins including an six-second pin in her first match of the tournament.
Choate Rosemary Hall’s Rhema Woolcock finished second in the round-robin competition at 235 pounds, going 3-1 in four bouts.
Choate Rosemary Hall’s Olivia Mancha (100) and Chloe Ross (145) finished third while Olivia Polanski (107), Leanna La (138) and Mya Straks (185) finished fourth.
Henckel was leading 4-2 in the second period before Penley got a takedown and a four-point near fall with 27 seconds left in the period. Henckel couldn’t get any points in the third period and it denied Henckel a fourth national championship.
Henckel won titles at 152 pounds in 2023 and 2024 and at 165 pounds a year ago.
Hopkins’ Anna Ivanova finished fourth at 145 pounds to earn All-American honors for the first time.
