Xavier’s Gonzalez wins Best Championship Performance award

Xavier’s Braylon Gonzalez won the Best Championship Performance award at Tuesday’s GameTimeCT Sports Awards show in Bridgeport.

Xavier High wrestler Braylon Gonzalez won the award for the Best Championship Performance in a boys sport at the second annual GameTimeCT High School Sports Award show on Tuesday night at the Hartford HealthCare amphitheater in Bridgeport.

Part of the Hearst Connecticut media group in Connecticut, GameTimeCT focuses on high school sports coverage and provides high school sports coverage for Hearst Connecticut’s family of 10 daily and 13 weekly newspapers in the state.

The Sports Award show highlights and honors the most inspiring athletes and exciting athletic performances over the previous school year. Nearly 1,000 athletes and guests were at the invitation-only event.

Gonzalez, who lives in Newington, became the first Xavier wrestler in school history and 17th in state history to win three consecutive State Open championships last March at 144 pounds.

Named the state wrestler of the year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association, Gonzalez helped Xavier win the Class L title for the sixth straight year and the State Open championship for the fifth consecutive season.
