The top 10 teams in Connecticut Wrestling Online’s weekly poll didn’t change but there was some movement.
Xavier (3-0) remains No. 1 with 14 first place votes with East Hartford (7-0) and Danbury (4-0) also picking up first place votes in voting by state coaches and media members.
No. 1 Xavier had quiet week with a 58-18 win over Amity and the weekend off. The Falcons return to action on Wednesday when travel to Notre Dame-West Haven. Xavier hosts the Colter Abely tournament on Saturday at Mercy High.
The tournament is different than most high school tournaments.
There are 16 wrestlers in each weight class, divided up into four pools of four wrestlers each. After a round robin competition and three matches, the winners of each pool advanced to the championship semifinals with the winners wrestling for the title and the losers wrestling for third place.
The four second-place finishers in each pool also competed in the consolation round along with the four wrestlers who finished third and the four wrestlers who finished fourth.
No. 2 East Hartford (7-0) also had the weekend off. The Hornets beat Wethersfield, 76-0 last Wednesday with eight pins and two technical falls.
East Hartford hosts RHAM on Wednesday night before heating to Hall on Saturday for the Greater Hartford Open in search of their fourth tournament win of the season.
Ridgefield (6-0) moved up one spot to No. 3 after beating Fairfield Ludlowe, 59-15, last Wednesday and finishing 14th at the Eastern States Classic in New York State with eight wrestlers.
Danbury (4-0) slipped one position to No. 4. The Hatters beat No. 7 Trumbull last Wednesday, 56-17 before taking fourth at the John Gorman Tournament in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The Hatters also had three wrestlers at Eastern States.
No. 5 Fairfield Warde (4-1) won their first tournament of the year by winning the Warde Invitational with a tournament record 301½ points and a 150-point win over second-place Shelton. The Mustangs won the tournament for the 12th time and for the ninth straight time.
No. 6 Newtown (6-1) was impressive with a 13th place finish at the Eastern States Classic in Clifton Park, New York. The Nighthawks had 11 wrestlers in the tournament and two medalists – Jake Maddox, who was sixth at 152 and Marc Maurath, who was seventh at 160.
Trumbull (17-1) went 6-0 this week and remained at No. 7 while New Milford (2-0) moved up one spot to No. 8 with their second tournament win of the season at the John Gorman Memorial Tournament.
The Green Wave had two champions, three finalists and nine wrestlers finish in the top four in their respective weight class. New Milford won the tournament for the second straight year and third time overall
No. 9 Southington (5-2) moved up one spot after finishing second at their own Ray Southland Memorial Duals. The Blue Knights won their pool with victories over NFA, Greenwich and Branford before falling in a 42-36 loss to Melrose, Mass. Melrose won the tournament for the second time in three years.
No. 10 Killingly (21-1) saw their long dual meet winning streak come to an end on Saturday. Killingly beat Terryville/Thomaston, Woodstock Academy and Bacon Academy to earn a spot in the three-team championship pool at Ellis Tech.
But in Killingly’s first championship round match, Windham outlasted Killingly, 37-36 to end the team’s dual meet winning streak at 80 matches. Killingly beat Ledyard , 46-36 to finish the tournament with a 4-1 record.
Killingly’s 80-match winning streak is the second longest in state history, according to the Connecticut High School Wresting Record Book. It began with wins in the final five matches of the 2022 season, undefeated seasons in 2023 (25-0) and 2024 (30-0) and 20 wins to open this season.
The longest winning streak in state history belongs to Danbury, who won 96 in a row from 1996 through 2001.

Trumbull High coach Charlie Anderson earned his 400th career win on Saturday in East Haven.
Charlie Anderson, Trumbull’s Hall of Fame wrestling coach, earned his 400th win over the weekend in a six-team meet in East Haven.
The Eagles (17-1) won five matches with victories over Glastonbury, Waterford, Masuk, East Haven and Portland/Cromwell.
Anderson has been coaching in Connecticut since 1986 when he spent three years as an assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State before becoming an assistant coach at Norwalk High. He was the head coach at Norwalk from 1991-99 and was recognized as the FCIAC Coach of the Year in 1999.
Charlie has had two tours as the head coach in Trumbull in 2007-12 and 2016 to present, winning the FCIAC Coach of the Year award a second time in 2008. He was named the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year in Class LL in 2012. Charlie didn’t step away from the program after the 2012 season. He was an assistant coach with the Eagles from 2013-15.
Anderson led the Eagles to their first Class LL state championship in 2023 with a 3½-point win over East Hartford. The Eagles finished second in 2019 in Class LL. His teams at Trumbull and Norwalk finished in the top five of the Class LL tournament 12 times.
His 2017 Trumbull team (20-1) had the best record in his career and the 2024 Trumbull team (27-3) had the most wins in a single season in his career.
Anderson, now 401-103-3, was inducted into the Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2019.

Simsbury’s Max Konopka, shown at last year’s New England championship, won an Eastern States Classic title on Saturday.
Simsbury sophomore Max Konopka (190) became the first Connecticut wrestler since 2020 to win an individual championship at the Eastern States Classic in Clifton Park, New York on Saturday.
Konopka outlasted No. 13 Devin Downes, a two-time New York State champion, 8-4 in triple OT in the championship match.
Evan Schibi of Gilbert/Torrington/Wolcott Tech finished second at 152 pounds as Newtown (13th, 47 points) and Ridgefield (14th, 46½ points) each finished in the top 15. The best finish by a state team in the tournament was Danbury’s third place finish in 2020.
Konopka moved into the semifinals with a pin and two technical falls. In the semifinal, Konopka scored seven points in the last 27 seconds to earn a 10-8 win over Greyson Meak of Cold Spring Harbor, New York.
Konopka trailed 8-3 when he got a three-point takedown and then a four-point near fall to secure the victory.
In the championship match, Konopka, who is ranked No. 22 nationally by Sports Illustrated faced Downes. The match was tied 2-2 after three periods. In the second OT, each got a two-point reversal. In the third and final OT session, Konopka got a four-point near fall to secure the 8-4 victory.
The last Connecticut wrestler to win an Eastern States Classic title was Joel Barlow’s Carson LiCastri (195) in 2020. Six other state wrestlers have won Eastern States championships, including Danbury’s Kevin Jack, who won it twice in 2012 and 2013.
Schibi went 4-1 on the day and moved into the quarterfinals with a pin and a near fall. He beat St. Francis’ Rory White in the quarterfinals, 15-4 before beating Poly Prep’s Zikhiriadin Madjidov, 7-1 in the semifinals.
In the championship match, Schibi dropped a 13-4 decision to Luke Nieto of Plainedge, New York.

East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Lincoln Carlson (215) was named outstanding wrestler at the Phoenix Mid-Winter Scramble last Saturday in Syracuse. Carlson and teammates Anthony Caisse (154) and Jonathan Harris (285) each won their respective weight classes as East Lyme/Norwich Tech finished fifth.

It was a special evening the day after Christmas in Danielson. Berlin, coached by Peter Veleas, squared off against Ellis Tech, coached by his son, Zach. On the mat, the match referee was Daniel Veleas, another one of Peter’s sons. Berlin prevailed in the match, 48-36.

A week after a tough 18th place finish at the Bristol Central Invitational, Avon (9-2) turned in an outstanding performance to win the 36th annual Art Powers Duals in Berlin on Saturday with a 47-34 win over South Windsor.
The Falcons outlasted Bristol Central, 46-13, beat RHAM, 45-33 and rolled past Montville/Plainfield.
It was Avon’s first-ever win in the state’s oldest dual meet tournament. The Falcons lost to Branford in the finals in 2020.

With three individual champions and four finalists, Cheshire outlasted host Canton, 201½ to 174½ to capture the Warrior Invitational on Saturday. Six Cheshire wrestlers finishing third also helped the Rams. Canton had one individual champion and six finalists.
The tournament also featured six girls-only weight classes. Four were round robin competitions.

Foran beat Amity, 48-27 to win the John Chaco Duals at Staples in Westport on Saturday. Foran (17-2) beat New Britain, Stratford and Staples to earn a spot in the championship final. Foran won the tournament for the second time in three years.
