The Danbury High wrestling team has put together some legendary winning streaks in the past four decades.
The Hatters share the record for most state championships with Ledyard at 23 each. At one point, Danbury captured 14 consecutive Class LL championships from 1997 through 2010.
Danbury won 96 consecutive dual meets from 1996 through 2001. They won 262 consecutive matches against Connecticut teams from 1996 through 2010.
Against opponents in their own league, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC), the Hatters had not lost a dual meet since January 1986.
That 39-year-old streak is history.
No. 5 Fairfield Warde got four pins and won nine of 14 matches to beat Danbury, 42-26 on Saturday in FCIAC action in Danbury.
It brought to an end to Danbury’s FCIAC winning streak at 461 dual meets. The last time that the Hatters lost to an FCIAC opponent was in a 37-24 loss to Greenwich in January 1986.
“The dual meet win (over Danbury) has been very elusive to Warde wrestling,” said Jason Shaughnessy, Fairfield Warde’s head coach. “We have been very close in recent years with some bad luck making us fall short.”
Danbury beat the Mustangs last December, 38-37 and earned another one point decision with a 35-34 victory in January 2022. That 2022 loss was the only defeat for Warde in a 20-1 campaign.
“It is an amazing streak Danbury has sustained over the years and something that will be tough to replicate by any program,” Shaughnessy said. “We are proud to be the team to break it. But our sights are set on FCIAC and state championship this post season.”
The Mustangs are hoping to win a third straight FCIAC championship this season and a second consecutive Class LL championship.
Fairfield Warde won six of the first seven matches to take a 30-6 lead over Danbury with pins from Cole Grenier (190), Jude Grammatico (113) and Andres Bernal-Mendoza (120). The win from Owen Sheiman (144) clinched the win for the Mustangs.
Fairfield Warde (7-1) also beat Bristol Eastern on Saturday, 57-21.
Cristian Pote (132), Justin Barker (215) and Harrison Muller (165) had pins for Danbury (6-1)
