
Glenn Rupert, the Hall of Fame coach from Waterford, died earlier this month at the age of 81.
Glenn Rupert, the Hall of Fame wrestling coach from Waterford, has passed away at the age of 81. He died on Sunday, January 19, 2025, in New Jersey where he resided close to his family.
Rupert was a long-time coach in Waterford. He started a youth wrestling program at Clark Junior High in Waterford and coached the varsity program at Waterford High from 1966 through 1987.
His Lancers won a CIAC Class S state championship in 1985 and earned second place trophies four times in Class M (1977, 1981, 1986) and in Class S (1984).
Rupert’s Waterford squad won the first Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament title in 1971 and finished second six times. In his career, Waterford had 44 ECC champions, 24 wrestlers that won state titles (Class M or S) and nine wrestlers that captured State Open championships.
His Waterford teams won more than 200 dual meet matches (201-124-3). He was named wrestling coach of the year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in 1982.
Rupert stayed active in wrestling after he stepped away from his Waterford High position. He was appointed the state chairman for Connecticut by the National Wrestling Federation and held that role for several years.
During his tenure at state chairman, Waterford hosted the Connecticut national team twice and Rupert was an assistant coach five times with the Connecticut team that traveled to the national freestyle and Greco-Roman national championship tournament in Iowa. He also served on the CIAC wrestling committee for four years.
In 2005, he was inducted into the Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 2010, he was inducted into the Waterford Athletic Hall of Fame.
After graduating from Bloomsburg University with a teaching degree in science in 1965, Rupert began his teaching career at Clark Lane Junior High. He eventually moved to Waterford High, where he taught math.
In addition to coaching wrestling, Rupert was an assistant soccer coach with the Lancers and directed one-act plays in the yearly One Act Play competition at Waterford High.
Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 31, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomsburg, Pa. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11 a.m. The family is planning a celebration of life ceremony to be held in Connecticut this summer.
