Xavier falls in final of Demolition Duals to host Mount St. Joseph

In the inaugural Demolition Duals, No. 1 Xavier won their first six matches before falling to host Mount St. Joseph, the No. 3 ranked team in Maryland, in Saturday afternoon’s championship match, 38-30, at The Smith Center in Baltimore.

The tournament featured 15 teams from seven states, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey.

Xavier (12-1) went undefeated in their pool with six victories to earn a spot in the four-team championship round. The Falcons beat Fairfax, Virginia in the semifinals, 55-23 with five pins and two technical falls.

In the championship match against the Gaels of Mount Saint Joseph, Xavier took a 19-8 lead after the first six weight classes. Chase Catalano (165) and Alden Gaboury (285) had victories with Lucas Sharillo (175) getting a pin and Sam Andrea (190) picking up a forfeit. The match began at 157 pounds.

Mount St. Joseph won three of the next four bouts with two pins and a tech fall to tie the match at 25-25 with four matches remaining.

Xavier’s Braylon Gonzalez (132) won by technical fall to put the Falcons up by five, 30-25 but Mt. St. Joseph’s Tyler Stephens (138) got a pin to put the Gaels up by one, 31-30. The Gaels picked up two decisions in the final two matches to secure a 38-30 decision.

The Gaels won five of the final six bouts to win the championship.

The win snapped Xavier’s dual meet winning streak at 22 matches. The Falcons won the final 10 matches last season.

The Gaels were ranked No. 3 in the latest Maryland rankings by LegacyWrestling.com. St. Mary’s-Ryken of Leonardtown, Md., whom Xavier beat in pool play, 58-22, was ranked No. 15 in Maryland.
