WESTPORT, February 16, 2019 – Five Connecticut wrestlers won New England Prep School championships Saturday at the New England Independent School Wrestling Association (NEISWA) tournament at Greens Farms Academy.

Greens Farms sophomore Nico Provo of Stratford (113) won his second straight New England championship along with senior teammate Griffin Seyfried (126). Freshman Peter Kane of Westport also won for Greens Farms at 132 pounds to lead the Dragons to a third place finish – their best-ever finish in the New England tournament.

Pomfret’s Cole McGill won a title at 145 along with Pearson Hill (152), an eighth grade student at Hamden Hall.

Belmont Hill from Belmont, Mass., and Northfield Mt. Hermon from Northfield, Mass., tied for the championship with 195½ points. It is the first time in tournament history that two teams have shared the title. Both teams had three individual champions.

The top six wrestlers in each weight class earned an invitational to the 2019 National Prep School championship tournament next weekend at Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa.

Provo beat Kelvin Griffin of the Brooks School, 4-3 with a takedown with 56 seconds left in the match. Kane made a first period takedown stand up in a 2-0 win over Owen Finn of Northfield Mt. Hermon.

Seyfried, who was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, won a thriller with Chris Perry of Brunswick-Greenwich, 8-6 in overtime. Perry took a 6-4 lead with a reversal with 24 seconds left in the match but Seyfried battled back to get a reversal with two seconds remaining to tie the match at 6-6 and send into OT.

Seyfried, who ranked No. 10 in the nation in the prep school rankings, got the winning takedown with 24 seconds left in overtime. Perry slips to 37-2 on the season.

McGill had four pins as he rolled to a championship. McGill pinned Brunswick’s Nick Bell in the final in 4:53. Hill, an eighth grade student from Hamden Hall, was outstanding at 152 pounds. He was 5-0 in the tournament with three pins and a technical fall.

In the final, Hill had a pair of takedowns and three near falls in a 16-4 win over Charlie McLaughlin of Northfield Mt. Hermon.

Brunswick School from Greenwich finished fifth, a half point behind Trinity Pawling.

Senior Luca Errico (138) won his first New England championship with a 5-4 win over top-seeded Dominic Rossetti of Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, who is ranked No. 6 nationally. Errico got a takedown with 1:15 remaining to take a 5-3 lead. Rossetti escaped with 1:01 left but couldn’t get another takedown.

In the semifinals, Errico (44-0) beat Phillips Exeter’s Zach Spencer, who is ranked No. 11 in the nation. Spencer scored five points in the final 29 seconds but Errico was able to survive, 9-8.

Perry, Bell (32-8) and Tim Saunders each finished second for Brunswick.

Saunders (38-3) pinned his way through the 195 lb. bracket to get to the finals, but lost a 9-5 decision to returning Prep All-American Henry Lagasse (Exeter), who is ranked No. 4 nationally.

For Belmont Hill, it is their fifth New England championship while it is the sixth New England title for Northfield Mt. Hermon. Greens Farms Academy won the New England title for Small Schools.
