
Senior Cross Cannone of Trumbull earned his 100th career win Monday night in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS, December 17, 2018 – Trumbull senior Cross Cannone won two matches on Monday as the No. 2 Wartburg College wrestling team improved to 6-0 with three victories at the Desert Duals.
Cannone, a defending NCAA Division III champion, won his 100th collegiate match and extended his winning streak to 47 consecutive bouts.
The No. 1 ranked Division III wrestler in the nation at 157 pounds, Cannone (13-0) beat No. 7 Payton Tawater of Colorodo Mesa and then earned his 100th win with a 15-0 win by tech fall over Rafael Roman of North Central College.
He is the 36th wrestler in team history with 100 collegiate victories.
Cannone was named the American Rivers Conference wrestler of the week earlier this month. He has 28 wins by technical fall. That is tied for second on Wartburg’s career list.
Wartburg returns to action on January 4-5 at the NWCA National Duals.
Coast Guard’s McGowan recognized
NEW LONDON, Conn., December 11 – Coast Guard sophomore Matt McGowan has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week.
Last week, McGowan, ranked fourth in New England at 149 pounds, upset Da’mani Burns of Johnson & Wales, who was ranked second nationally, 11-6 in the No. 25 Bears’ 22-15 loss to No. 3 Wildcats.
McGowan would later in the week pin Cooper Fleming from Castleton in 4:40 in a 37-14 win.
This season, McGowan is 8-3 overall with three pins and 6-1 at 149 pounds. He placed second at 149 pounds at the Ted Reese Invitational. Coast Guard returns to action on January 9.
