Two state wrestlers helping defending champion Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa, Dec. 19 — Two Connecticut wrestlers have helped the defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) College wrestling team to the No. 2 ranking in the nation. Junior Cross Cannone (149) of Trumbull and freshman Michael Ross of Foran-Milford (165) are both undefeated on the season.

Cannone, who ranked No. 1 in Division III at 149 pounds, is 15-0 on the year with 10 near falls. Cannone finished second in the nation and earned All-American honors last March at 141 pounds as Wartburg won their 13th NCAA Division III national title. Ross is 12-0 at 165 pounds for Wartburg, who is 8-1 on the season. Wartburg returns to action on January 4-6 when they compete in the NWCA National Duals.

In high school action on Tuesday night, South Windsor won their first match of the season with a 45-24 victory over Conard-West Hartford. … Trumbull High’s wrestling Alumni Day is Saturday, Dec. 23. Ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. All wrestlers should report at 8:30 a.m.
