Ahmadi, 70, brings home another national title

LAS VEGAS, April 25, 2019 – Coventry’s Shirzad Ahmadi, 70, is still winning on the wrestling mat. Ahmadi earned another national championship Thursday at the U.S. Open championships winning the freestyle championship in the Masters E Division (ages 62-70).

Ahmadi won both of his matches by technical fall to bring home another national championship at 62 kilograms (126 pounds).

A four-time Iranian national champion and an International Military Sports Council (CISM) Military World Games champion, Ahmadi has 40 years of coaching experience at the high school level and in college at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels.

Ahmadi just completed his third year as an assistant coach at Trinity College. He was a long-time coach at Stafford High from 1980 through 2012. He has also coached at American International College (Division II) and at the University of Hartford (Division I).

He has won the U.S. Veterans national title 24 times and is a 16-time Veterans world champion. In 2015, he became the first American wrestler to win a Veterans world title in freestyle and Greco Roman in the same tournament.
