Ledyard wins first ECC girls championship in wrestling

With one champion, two finalists and four girls finishing in the top four of their weight class, Ledyard won the first Eastern Connecticut Conference girls wrestling championship Thursday at New London High.

Ledyard beat NFA by 12 points, 74-62, to win the first girls wrestling conference tournament in state history. Twelve teams entered girls in the tournament with NFA and Griswold/Wheeler each coming home with two individual champions.

The Central Connecticut Conference will host their first girls wrestling conference tournament on Saturday at Platt in Meriden.

Kaitlyn Schlimgen (185) picked up a individual title for the Colonials with a pin in the finals while teammate Brooklyn Hepburn (235) finished second. Ariyana Nelson (114) and Danielle Garrett (152) each finished third for Ledyard.

Felicitas Dietz (107) and Jillian Comeau (132) won titles for Griswold/Wheeler while Tiyana Taylor (285) and Tisiane Monteiro (152) brought home titles for NFA.

Killingly’s Joseline Sanchez Ruelas (114) and Putnam’s Abigail Daniels (120) each won individual titles.
