For the second consecutive year, New England’s best prep school wrestling teams are in Connecticut.
With seven individual champions and 12 finalists, Greens Farms Academy in Westport won their fourth straight New England championship on Saturday at their own Coyle Gym with a tournament record 392½ points, breaking the mark that the Dragons set two years ago in 2024.
In the girls tournament, Choate Rosemary Hall won their second consecutive New England girls championship with four individual champions and eight finalists. Choate beat Phillips Andover from Massachusetts by 45½ points.
Both teams will be competing at the national prep school championship tournaments this weekend at Lehigh University.
Greens Farms Academy (17-3) was simply dominant with seven New England champions and all 14 wrestlers finishing in the top three of their respective weight classes.
Ridgefield’s Jaxon Sgrulletta (113), Plainville’s Jaxsen Bailey (132), New Fairfield’s Joe Mahoney (144), Milford’s Jeremy McGrath (157), New Canaan’s Blake Jacobsen (165), Kaleb Jackson (190) and Simsbury’s Max Konopka (215) each won New England titles for the Dragons.
Mahoney won his second straight New England title for the Dragons.
Plainfield’s Logan Bailey (106), Marlborough’s Jackson Heslin (126), Newtown’s Brighton Karvoski (138), Jack Harty (175) and Norwalk’s Ryan Schneider (285) each finished second.
Heslin was shooting for a third straight New England title but he dropped a 2-1 decision to Belmont Hill’s Isaac Novod, who won his third straight New England championship. The difference was a stalling call with 56 seconds left in the third period. Karvoski dropped a 1-0 decision to Jack Dragoumanos of Belmont Hill in his title bout thanks to an escape with 1:33 remaining.
Northfield Mount Hermon from Gill, Mass., finished second behind GFA for the third straight year. Northfield wrestler Colby Houle, who is from Canton, won his first New England championship at 150 pounds with a 10-5 win over Andrew McCarthy of New York Military Academy.
In the girls tournament, Olivia Polansky (107), Tatianna Irizarry (114), Sara McLaughlin (132), Chloe Ross (145) and Kate Ellis Henderson (152) won championships for Choate Rosemary Hall.
It was a third straight New England championship for McLaughlin and a second straight for Irizarry. Olivia Mancha (100), Lily Runez (114), Sofia Seymour (138) and Rhema Woolcock (285) each finished second for Choate Rosemary Hall.
Greens Farms Academy’s Kayla Batres of Stratford won her second straight New England championship at 114 pounds while Forman School’s Claire Rooney won her first New England title at 126 pounds.
Hopkins’ Anna Ivanova finished second at 145 pounds.
In terms of New England championships, the record for most championships is held by Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire with 14, most recently in 2017. With this victory, GFA ties the record for most New England titles by a Connecticut-based school. Loomis Chaffee in Windsor won four titles in five years from 2002 through 2006. The last team to win four New England titles in a row was Northfield Mt. Hermon from 2010-13. GFA broke the record of 344 points that they set in 2024.
This was the seventh New England championship meet for the girls. Phillips Andover from Andover, Mass., won three consecutive titles from 2022-24.
