Big win for Ebert, No. 7 NC State wins opener, Sacred Heart drops two

Three Connecticut wrestlers picked up victories on Saturday at the Journeyman Wrangle Mania duals tournament at Liberty High in Bethlehem, Pa.

Former Fairfield Warde wrestler Will Ebert picked up a big 2-0 win over nationally ranked Edmond Ruth of No. 17 Illinois in a match at 184 pounds while former Danbury High wrestler Jakob Camacho picked up a win for No. 7 North Carolina State.

Sacred Heart wrestled twice in the tournament. The Pioneers won six matches but lost to Virginia Military Institute, 21-19. Sacred Heart also dropped a 37-5 decision to Buffalo to fall to 1-2 on the young season.

No. 17 Illinois beat Binghamton, 30-10 in the season-opening match for the Bears but Ebert (184) received plenty of attention after shutting out No. 5 Edmond Ruth 2-0.

“Will Ebert had a statement win today,” said Binghamton head coach Kyle Borshoff. “It was great to see the hard work that he’s been putting in pay off.

A year ago, Ruth earned All-American honors and won the Big 10 championship for Illinois. Ebert was able to keep the match scoreless in the first period. Ebert then rode Ruth for the entire second period, before getting an escape at the start of the third. He was able to hold off all of Ruth’s offense in the final period to secure the decision.

Camacho, a senior, helped North Carolina State earn a 44-3 win over Campbell in the opening dual meet of the year for the Wolfpack. Camacho, who is ranked No. 7 in the country at 125 pounds, beat No. 27 Anthony Molton, 7-2.

North Carolina State is the defending ACC champion.

Danbury High graduate Ryan Jack, a three-time NCAA tournament qualifier who earned All-American honors for the first time in March, won’t be in the Wolfpack lineup this season. Jack (141) is taking a redshirt year. Two-time All-American Kai Orine moved up to 141 for his final season of wrestling.

Sacred Heart (1-2) fell one win shy of capturing their first dual meet victory of the season in a 21-19 loss to Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The Pioneers won three straight matches with victories from Felix Lettini (157), Ryan Vigil (165) and Aidan Zarella (174) to take a 16-12 lead with three matches remaining.

But VMI’s Braxton Lewis outlasted Sacred Heart’s Hunter Perez, 8-2 and Toby Schoffstall picked up VMI’s third pin of the match over Jake Trovato to put VMI back in front, 21-16. VMI won just four matches but three wins were pins, accounting for 18 of their 21 points.

Norwalk’s Brendan Gilchrist (275) earned a decision for Sacred Heart in the final bout of the match to cut the lead to 21-19.

Sacred Heart’s Andrew Fallon (133) picked up a win by tech fall to earn the only points for the Pioneers in a 37-5 loss to Buffalo.

WPI finished fourth at the Racich Rumble hosted by Ursinus University in Collegeville, Pa., on Saturday. Tanner Thatcher (125) and Joseph Tully (174) each finished second for the Engineers.

Jerry Hill of Bethel picked up a win at 141 for WPI while Avon’s Jonah Weber secured his first collegiate win with a tech fall victory at 149 pounds.

WPI kicks off the dual meet portion of its schedule next Saturday in Providence, tangling with host Rhode Island College and Plymouth State.

Trinity College finished 10th at the Racich Rumble with three wrestlers finishing fourth — Ty Trickle (133), Matthew Corrozza (133) and Chris Perry (149).
