The Greens Farms Academy wrestling found themselves being challenged in Saturday’s New England Prep School championship meet at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford.
The Dragons were running neck and neck with Northfield Mt. Hermon from Northfield, Mass., for much of the tournament. Northfield has won seven New England championships since 2008.
Greens Farms embraced the challenge, putting 10 wrestlers in the finals – just as Northfield did – and winning eight matches to win their second consecutive New England championship with a 12½-point win over Northfield Mt. Hermon, 344-331½.
In the medal round, which consists of the championship final along with the third place and fifth place bouts, GFA went 11-2 while Northfield went 5-8.
“One of the things that sets our team apart is that they just enjoy competing,” GFA head coach Jack Conroy said. “Just our love of wrestling showed up. It was super competitive and it was good to get challenged.”
Marlborough’s Jackson Heslin (120), New Canaan’s Brady Kaupp (126), Fairfield’s Ben Zuckerman (132), North Haven’s Giuseppe Iamunno (144), Norwalk’s Ronnie Christolin (150), Newtown’s Nate Taylor (190), Danbury’s Dominic Iaquinto (215) and Xavier Giles (165), who lives in the Bronx, all won individual titles for the Dragons.
Newtown’s Brighton Jarvoski (106) and Norwalk’s J.T. Schneider (138) each finished second.
Kaupp (126) won his second New England title with a 3-1 win in overtime over Jack Dragoumanos of Belmont Hill in Belmont, Mass.
Zuckerman outlasted Northfield’s Colby Houle, a freshman from Canton, in the final at 132 pounds, 4-3, to win his second New England championship.
Taylor, who is ranked No. 2 in the country by National Prep Wrestling.com, won his third straight New England championship with a 3-0 win over Northfield’s Mark Ayala (190).
Iammuno (144), Christolin (150) and Giles (165) each won their second straight New England championships
Iaqunito got a 1-0 decision in the finals over Northfield’s Dylan Greenstein, who ranked No. 2 at 215 by National Prep Wrestling.com.
Greens Farms is the first Connecticut school to win consecutive New England championships since Windsor’s Loomis-Chaffee won three straight from 2002-04.
Greens Farms will conclude the season with a trip to the Prep School National championship tournament next week at Lehigh University.
Wallingford’s Calli Gilchrist of Choate Rosemary Hall chose to wrestle in the boys tournament and finished fifth in New England at 120 pounds. Even though she qualified for the boys national tournament, she will wrestle in the girls tournament next week.
At the New England girls tournament, GFA’s Kayla Batres, a freshman from Stratford, won a New England title at 107 pounds for the Dragons.
Wallingford’s Sarah McLaughlin (120), who attends Choate Rosemary Hall, was the only other Connecticut wrestler to win a title with a 7-0 win over Natalia Accorsi of Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass.
GFA’s April Torres from Shelton lost in the finals at 165 pounds, dropping a 6-4 decision in overtime to Toni Elliott of Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.
