The Sacred Heart men’s wrestling team was competitive in their season-opening matches on Saturday at WrangleMania in Bethlehem, Pa., but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
Long Island University won six decisions, including four that were decided by four points or less as the Sharks beat Sacred Heart, 28-10. The Pioneers dropped their second match of the day against Bloomsburg University, 28-18.
Scotty Jarosz (165) and Andrew Fallon (133) each picked up a pair of victories for the Pioneers. Against Long Island, the Sharks won by two points at 125 pounds with Robert Sagrais’ 6-4 victory over Jacob Ice and by three points in Aeden Begue’s 4-1 win over Sacred Heart’s Marc Berisha.
Against Bloomsburg, Sacred Heart trailed by one after six matches, 13-12 but the Huskies won three of the final four bouts with two pins to pull away and earn the 28-18 decision.
No. 3 North Carolina State was also in the building for WrangleMania and the Wolfpack swept a pair of matches from No. 25 Purdue, 37-3 and Bloomsburg University, 45-4 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Three former Danbury High wrestlers competed for the Wolfpack. Jakob Camacho won a pair of matches at 125. He beat Bronson Garber of Bloomsburg. 19-4 and beat No. 3 ranked Matt Ramos of Purdue, 8-5. A.J. Kovacs (165) picked up a pair of victories including a 2-0 win over Purdue’s Cooper Noehre.
Ryan Jack (141) wrestled just once against Purdue and came away with a 17-2 win by tech fall over Greyson Clark.
Devin Matthews, a graduate from Gilbert School in Winsted, wrestled twice for Long Island at 141 on Saturday and came up with a pair of victories for the Sharks. He had a 6-2 win over Sacred Heart’s Vincent Milazzo and a pin over Buffalo’s Andy Lucinsky in 2:53. Along with their 19-15 win over Sacred Heart, Long Island also beat Buffalo, 28-10 to open the season with a 2-0 record.
Sacred Heart and North Carolina State will remain in Bethlehem for Sunday’s Journeyman Collegiate Classic tournament.
