With two finalists, Wesleyan finished second at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday behind No. 11 Vermont State University, formerly known as Castleton University. Max Martinez (141) and Milford’s C.J. Shea (157) finished second for Wesleyan, which placed nine wrestlers in the tournament.

Vermont State won the tournament for the second straight year, 197-119 over Wesleyan. The Spartans had seven individuals win their respective weight classes and had four other wrestlers finish second, including Middletown’s Elijah Cyr at 149 pounds.

Shea opened the tournament with a 16-7 major decision over SUNY Cortland’s Hunter Hughes before making a quick go of Coast Guard’s Landon Kearns 7-0 by decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round Shea toppled Steven Dalling of Stevens with a 14-1 major decision. Shea fell in the finals to Vermont State’s Nate Camiscioli, 4-2.

Martinez pinned Coast Guard’s Vivi Christopoulos in 1:22 for the first of his four wins in the tournament. Martinez followed with another pin over Southern Maine’s Dominic Pelletier, 1:03. Shane Walczyk of Cortland put up a strong showing but Martinez pulled the 6-4 decision. Martinez landed another fall in the semifinal round, downing Norwich’s Jojo Lotruglio 1:55. Vermont State’s James Rodriguez won the championship at 141 over Martinez with a 17-3 decision.

Aris Dahiell (125), Andrew Majorini (165) and Joe Colon (174) each finished third for the Cardinals.

In July, Castleton University, Vermont Technical College and Northern Vermont University joined together to become Vermont State University.
