The NCAA season is over for North Carolina State sophomore Ryan Jack.
Jack, the Danbury High graduate, was eliminated from the NCAA Division I tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday in an 18-6 loss to No. 22 seed Malyke Hines of Lehigh in the second round of consolation matches at 141 pounds.
Hines (21-13) took a big lead early. He had a takedown and a four-point near fall in the first period to grab a 6-0 lead. A reversal and a takedown in the second period allowed the Mountain Hawk wrestlers to extend his lead to 10-1.
Hines, who finished fourth in the EIWA tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament, trailed Columbia’s Matt Kazimir, 2-1 in the second period of his next consolation round bout. But he caught Kazimir on his back for a defensive pin and his first win three tries over Kazimir this season.
Hines, competing in his third NCAA tournament, fell one win shy of All-American honors.
Jack has competed two consecutive NCAA tournaments. He was seeded fifth in the tournament. Jack beat No. 28 Saul Ervin of SIU-Edwardsville in his first match on Thursday, 3-2 before dropping a 6-5 decision to No. 12 Parker Filius of Purdue. Filius earned All-American honors on Friday night with a victory in the consolation round and will wrestle for seventh place on Saturday.
The only other Connecticut native in the tournament, Stanford’s Nico Provo (125) of Stratford, was eliminated on Thursday.
