Conference tournaments set for this weekend

This weekend is conference championship weekend when leagues around the state host their annual tournaments. We’ll provide a quick primer on what is going on and what you can see.

Eastern Connecticut Conference
Date: Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: Killingly High
Last year: Killingly 184½, NFA 153, New London 150½, East Lyme/Norwich Tech 150, Fitch 140
When to watch: Quarterfinals are Friday around 6 p.m. with semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. Finals expected to be Friday at 3 p.m. Tickets are only available online.
How to watch: Double-mat video available at the NFHS Network (search for Killingly). Finals will be broadcast live at the New London Day website through GameDayCT.

Of note: The winner of the 46th annual league tournament is the ECC champion and No. 7 Killingly (25-0) will be looking to win the tournament for the fifth consecutive season. It would be the longest streak since Ledyard won seven straight from 1980-86. … Ledyard’s Tatianna Irizarry (26-2) is the top seed at 106 and will be looking to be the first girl to win an ECC championship. … In terms of the ECC divisional titles, teams get one point for each divisional opponent they beat at the league tournament and one point for each dual meet win against a divisional opponent.

Joe Sikorski FCIAC Tournament
Date: Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: New Canaan High
Last year: Danbury 225½, Fairfield Warde 221, Staples 151, Trumbull 140, Ridgefield 139½
When to watch: Quarterfinals are Friday around 6 p.m. with semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. Finals expected to be Saturday at 4 p.m. Third place and fifth place bouts will be decided at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online.

Of note: No. 3 Danbury (12-1) is the favorite which is logical since they have won all but one FCIAC Tournament title since 1986. No. 6 Fairfield Warde won a FCIAC Tournament title in 2010. But look for Warde, Fairfield Ludlowe, which won their first FCIAC East title with a win over Warde on Tuesday, No. 9 Trumbull and Norwalk to challenge the Hatters.

Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) championships
Date: Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: Branford High
Last year: Xavier 264, Branford 122½, Fairfield Prep 118, Guilford 104½, Foran 98
When to watch: The tournament begins at 10 a.m. and the finals should be in the area of 3 p.m. Admission will be $10 adults, $5 students and senior citizens. The SCC finals will be broadcast live on YouTube at the CTWrestling Network.

Of note: No. 1 Xavier is the top team in the state and is the favorite. The Falcons have won their last two tournaments – Colter Abely Mid-Season Classic and the Methuen (Mass.) Invitational. Look for Foran and host Branford to challenge. The overall tournament winner earns the league championship.

Southwest Conference championships (SWC)
Date: Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: Stratford High
Last year: New Milford 181½, Newtown 171, Pomperaug 140, Stratford 147, New Fairfield 109½
When to watch: The tournament begins at 10 a.m. and the finals should be in the area of 3 p.m. Tickets are only available online.

Of note: Look for this to be a battle between No. 2 New Milford, No. 5 Newtown and New Fairfield. The Green Wave will be looking for a third straight tournament title and their sixth in seven seasons. Newtown last won this tournament in 2019.

North Central Connecticut Conference championships (NCCC)
Date: Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: Somers High

When to watch: The tournament begins at 10 a.m. and the finals should be in the area of 3 p.m

Of note: The league championship is up for grabs and it depends on the results of this tournament. In the NCCC, teams earn one point for each dual meet win against league opponents and a half-point for each team they beat at this championship meet. Defending champion Portland (7-0) went undefeated in the regular season with Stafford (6-1) and Rockville (5-2) following.

Berkshire Valley Tournament
Date: Saturday, Feb. 11
Site: Derby High
Last year: Nonnewaug 104, Gilbert 84, Terryville/Thomaston 71, Shepaug 56, Derby/Oxford/Holy Cross 55
When to watch: The tournament begins at 10 a.m. and the finals should be in the area of 2 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students, seniors and veterans.

Of note: Some of the smallest teams in the state compete in the Berkshire League. Nonnewaug (13-9, 3-0 BL) will be favored to win the tournament and win the Berkshire League title. The Chiefs need to finish at least second to clinch the BL title. Teams get two points for a dual meet win and one point for each BL team they beat at this tournament. Since the tournament began in 2015, only Berkshire League teams have won it.

Central Connecticut Conference
Outlook: The CCC held their conference tournament a week ago in Glastonbury with East Hartford outlasting RHAM and Avon to win their first-ever CCC tournament championship.
