Three Connecticut wrestlers earned medals at the 28th annual Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on Saturday.

Blair Academy’s Will Henckel of Southbury finished second at 150 pounds, Greens Farms Academy’s Nate Taylor of Newtown took seventh at 190 pounds with Blair Academy’s Matthew Lopes of Danbury finishing eighth at 132 pounds.

Tournament organizers told Greens Farms Academy coach Jack Conroy that these three wrestlers are believed to be the first Connecticut wrestlers to earn medals in the hard-nosed high school tournament. Eighteen of the 28 finalists from the recent Super 32 preseason tournament competed in the Ironman, including ten champions.

Henckel helped Blair Academy, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, win the tournament for the 17th time.

Henckel went 5-1, dropping a 8-6 decision to P.J. Duke on Minisink Valley, N.Y. in the championship final. Henckel beat No. 5 seed seed Wynton Denkins of Perrysburg, Ohio in the quarterfinals, 1-0 and upset No. 1 seed LaDarion Lockett of Stillwater, OK in the semifinals, 2-1 in overtime.

Henckel was seeded fourth and finished the tournament with one pin.

Taylor went 4-2 at 190 pounds. Taylor dropped a 7-2 decision to No. 4 seed A.J. Heeg of Stillwater, OK in the quarterfinals before advancing to the medal round with a 2-0 win in overtime. Taylor finished seventh with a 7-4 win over No. 14 seed Kael Bennie of Layton, Utah.

Lopes was eighth at 132 for Blair, going 4-3 on the afternoon. Lopes lost his second match of the tournament but won three straight matches with a pin and a 3-1 win in overtime to earn a spot in the medal round. Jaxon Joy of Wadsworth, Ohio nipped Lopes, 1-0, to finish seventh.

Two other Greens Farms Academy wrestlers came with Taylor and Conroy to participate in the tournament. GFA’s Joey Iamunno went 1-2 at 144 pounds while teammate Brady Kaupp (120 ) also went 1-2 in the event.
