Danbury native Ryan Jack finished third at the Cliff Keen Collegiate Invitational Saturday in Las Vegas.
Danbury High graduate Ryan Jack had four wins over ranked opponents to help No. 8 North Carolina State finish in second place, 10 points behind No. 16 Nebraska, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
Wolfpack teammate Trent Hidlay (184) and Isaac Trumble (197) each won their respective weight classes. Nebraska had three individual champions and four placewinners to win the tournament.
Sacred Heart participated in the 33-team event and finished 29th with 7½ points, the most points they have scored in four trips to the elite tournament.
Jack won his first three matches with wins over Ohio’s Kyran Hagan, 7-2, Columbia’s Matt Kazimir, 6-1, and Oregon State’s Cleveland Belton, 6-1 before dropping a 5-4 decision to Nebraska’s Brock Hardy in the semifinals. Hardy got a takedown as time expired to get the win.
Trailing 3-0 in the second period, Jack got an escape to cut the lead to two. In the third period, he got an escape with 1:41 left in the match and a takedown with 40 seconds left to take a one-point lead over Hardy, a No. 8 seed who won the tournament with a 6-1 win over Northern Iowa’s Carl Kappel.
Jack beat Virginia Tech’s Tom Crook in the consolation semifinals, 8-3 and finished third with a pin over Navy’s Joshua Koderhandt in 5:16.
n a battle of All-Americans, Hilday, the No. 2 seed defeated top-seed Parker Keckeisen of UNI, 8-2. Early in the first period, Hidlay whipped Keckeisen to his back for a takedown and four back points to lead 6-0.
In an active match with a ton of great scrambles, Trumble, also a No. 2 seed, edged No. 5 Tanner Harvey, Oregon State, 6-4. Harvey scored the first takedown, but after an escape, Trumble earned a counter takedown for a 3-2 lead. Harvey was penalized for pulling on the headgear to make it 4-2. A Harvey reversal knotted it at 4-4. Two more Trumble escapes secured the win.
Andrew Fallon (133) won a pair of matches for Sacred Heart with wins over Western Wyoming’s Cody Phelps, 6-5, and an 8-4 win over The Citadel’s George Rosa. Mike Manta (125), Jordan Carlucci (141), Matt Laurie (149) and Aidan Zarrella (165) each won one match each.
