Pins in two of the final three matches lifted No. 15 Sacred Heart to a 25-20 win over No. 11 Gannon University in the championship match at the Northeast Duals Sunday in Erie, Pa.

It’s the first-ever tournament championship for the Pioneers, who went 4-0 on the afternoon to win the title and improved to 6-2 on the year.

Host Gannon (3-1) had two-point lead after seven matches in the finals against Sacred Heart, 17-15. Sacred Heart’s Madison Sandquist (155), ranked No. 8 in the country, pinned Lili Ujfalvi in 1:22 to put the Pioneers up by three, 20-17.

Gannon’s Annabelle Helm outlasted Sacred Heart’s Jacklyn Smith (170) to tie the match at 20-20 but Sacred Heart’s Cara Broadus (191) pinned Jewel Gonzalez in 4:27 in the winner-take-all match to give the Pioneers the 25-20 victory.

No. 7 Alexandra Fitzgerald (130) had a pin for the Pioneers while No. 8 Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101) had a tech fall to help the Pioneers win the title.

Sacred Heart beat No. 11 East Stroudsburg in the other championship pool match, 35-13. Gannon and East Strousburg are tied for No. 11 in the latest NWCA poll.

Against ESU, the match was tied 10-10 after four matches but Sacred Heart dominated the final six matches. Fitzgerald pinned No. 5 Mia Maculuso in 1:14 and then Sandquist put the match out of reach with a tech fall to extend the lead to 25-13. Smith had a pin in 90 seconds at 171.

During the morning session, the Pioneers only lost one match as they easily won their pool with dominant wins over Elmira, 44-4 and Alvernia, 50-0. The five victories against Elmira were won by either pin or tech fall. The four pins versus Alvernia came in a total of 124 seconds, including Smith who only needed 11 seconds to get the win.

Sacred Heart returns to the mat with their first home matches of the season on Sunday when they welcome No. 8 Tiffin University (Ohio) at 11 a.m., and Western New England University at 1 p.m. at the Pitt Center in Fairfield.
