Three state wrestlers win medals at Preseason National Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa – Three Connecticut wrestlers earned medals this past weekend at the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason National Tournament.

Middletown’s Raekwon Shabazz won a championship at 106 pounds in the grades 11-12 tournament while Brady Kaupp of Greens Farms Academy finished seventh at 120 pounds in the grades 9-10 division for boys.

Cole Lemovitz finished fourth at 87 pounds in the boys grades 7-8 tournament.

Shabazz, who attends Xavier, went 5-0 in the tournament with three pins. He beat Nebraska’s Cadyn Coyle in the finals, 7-0. He beat three medalwinners, including Coyle to win the tournament.

Kaupp went 5-2 in the tournament including a 5-4 win over Iowa’s Justis Jesuroga to finish seventh. Kaupp got a takedown with 1:08 left in regulation to earn the win. Kaupp had one win and two shutout victories in the tournament.

Lemovitz, from Killingly, went 6-2 in the tournament with six straight wins in the consolation bracket to reach the consolation finals where he lost to Iowa’s Coy Mehlert, 6-1. Lemovitz had a two-point reversal at the buzzer to beat Illinois’ Garrett Speck, 5-3, and reach the medal round.
