Max Schwartz’s New England rankings: March 1, 2022

The state tournaments have been completed in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. In less than a few days, New England champions will be crowned for the first time since 2020 at the New England championship meet in Providence.

But before we hit the mat, journalist Max Schwartz from Norwalk, Conn., releases his final rankings of the season of the top 10 wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes based on head-to-head competition, placements in tournaments and past accolades.

Max wrestled at Norwalk High and is now a sports journalist, specializing in wrestling. Previously, he published a piece with FloWrestling about the growth of the sport in New England and currently writes for the FancoWrestling.com.

Musa Tamaradze (West Springfield, MA) slides into the No. 1 spot after defeating No. 2 James Tildsley (Billerica, MA) twice. Joe Mahoney (New Fairfield, CT) slides into the top 4 after dominating his way through the State Open in Connecticut. Yandel Morales (Andover, MA) and Anthony Touchette (Holliston, MA) also enter the rankings after a great showing in the MIAA All-State Tournament.

The top two stay the same. However, Miles Darling (Essex Tech, MA) finds himself in the No.3 position after beating No. 5 Alex Schaebulin (St. John’s Prep, MA) in the All-State tournament in Massachusetts.  No. 4 Isiaih Adams (Avon, CT) won the Connecticut State Open beating No. 7 Maximus Morse (Xavier, CT) in the finals.

The top three here do not move. However, No. 4 Ethan Titus (Canton, CT) jumps into 4th  after placing second in Connecticut with wins over No. 5 William Hamilton (Bristol Central, CT) and No. 9 Phoenix Gardella (Norwalk, CT). No. 8 Dante DiStefano (Waltham, MA) placed second in the All-State tournament in Masssachusetts, which allows him to debut in the rankings

No major changes. No. 10 Ivan Mazareigo (Central, RI) enters the rankings after a dominating second place finish in Rhode Island.

No. 1 Sidney Tildsley (Shawsheen Tech, MA), No. 2 Adam Schaebulin (St. John’s Prep, MA), No. 3 Ben Davoli (Haverhill, MA), No. 4 Austin Montiero (Minnechaug, MA), and No. 10 Tyler Kadish (Newton South, MA) took the top five places at the All-State tournament in Massachusetts. No. 6 Nicholas Torres (Hope, RI) beat No. 7 Aidan Roubichard (Coventry, RI) in the RI finals, and No. 8 Connor Swaim (North Kingstown, RI) finished third.

The top three stay intact as all three won state titles. No. 4 Jason Hood (Ponaganset, RI) slides into the top 10 after moving up a weight and coming in second place in the Rhode Island state tournament.  Elsewhere, No. 5 Ian Darling (Essex Tech, MA) beat No. 7 Jimmy Glynn (Central Catholic, MA) to place second in Massachusetts. No. 6 Blake Chapman (Montville, CT) placed second in Connecticut and No. 10 Codey Wild (Timberlane, NH) won the NHIAA Meet of Champions.

No. 4 Jack Richardson (Killingly, CT) came in second in Connecticut after beating No. 5 Logan Kovacs (Danbury, CT) in the semi-finals. No. 6 Andrew Reall (Ponaganset, RI) and No. 7 Maurice Cooper (Hope, RI) are the Rhode Island one and two and look to cause a ruckus in the New England tournament.

No. 3 Lucian Perla (Nashoba, MA) debuts in the rankings after placing second in Massachusetts and beating No. 6 Johnathon DaVila (Andover, MA). No. 5 Mason Concascia (Waterford, CT) also debuts in the rankings after an outstanding CIAC State Open, beating No. 7 Lucas Coleman (Fairfield Warde, CT) and others to place second in Connecticut.

No. 3 Nate Blanchette (Central Catholic, MA) won the MIAA All-State tournament and No. 6 Chad Mariano (Simsbury, CT) won the CIAC, beating No. 8 Josh Nieroda (Suffield/Windsor Locks, CT). No. 9 Fisher Stites (Newtown, CT), who dropped down a weight class, paced third in Connecticut.

No. 4 Desmond McLaughlin (Springfield Central, MA) won the All-State tournament while No. 6 Haden Bottiglieri (Brookline, MA) placed second. No. 8 Xavier Quilles (East Hartford, CT) is the Connecticut runner-up.

No. 2 Henry Pharris (Camden Hills, ME) slides in after beating No. 4 Issac Heiner (Mattanawcook/Lee) in Maine’s New England qualifying tournament on Feb. 26.  No. 6 Connor Smith (Fairfield Prep, CT) won in Connecticut and No. 9 Ryan Gilchrist (Norwalk, CT) placed third in in the state but has a win over the runner-up.

No. 1 Chris Murphy (Guilford, CT) came out on top in a scramble against No. 2 Brendan Gilchrist (Norwalk, CT) to earn a takedown and back points to secure the number one ranking in New England. Unfortunately, due to a seeding blunder, the two NHSCA All-Americans were on the same side of the bracket. Gilchrist finished third.  No. 7 Denis Cha (Arlington, MA) won the MIAA All-State and No. 8 Noah Daylor (North Kingstown, RI) won in Rhode Island.

No. 3 Michael Jarell (East Greenwich, RI) dominated in the RI States, beating No. 5 Atley Jenness in the finals. No. 4 Hampton Kaye-Kuter (Milford, MA) won his state, and No. 6 James Duhancik (Stratford, CT) proved to be a worthy foe for all, placing second in Connecticut.

The top three stay the same and Thomas Brown (Chelmsford, MA) jumps into the fourth spot after beating No. 8 Dominic Silva (Bridgewater-Rayham) in the MIAA finals. No. 6 Daniel DeBenardo (Milford, MA) and No. 7 Hayden Robinson (Raymond, NH) fall in line as the New Hampshire one and two. This weight class is very deep—any one of these 10 can place!

Team

Max’s team rankings are based on the number of ranked wrestlers. No. 1 St John’s Prep (MA) has held the top spot all year long and are bringing five wrestlers into the tournament. No. 3 Xavier (CT) moves up a couple spots after a dominant team win at the Connecticut State Open. They bring eight wrestlers. No. 5 Monty Tech (MA) slides into the rankings with three wrestlers ranked. No. 6 Coventry, which won the Rhode Island State team title, brings 5 wrestlers. No. 7 Timberlane (NH) falls down the ladder. And Nashoba MA makes its way into the Top 10 with tenth.
