Six conference tournaments set for this weekend

Six conference championship tournaments are scheduled for this weekend.

The Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) and Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) tournaments will be two-day events beginning Friday.

The Central Connecticut Conference (CCC), Southwest Conference (SWC) and North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC) will hold their championship events on Saturday along with the Berkshire Valley tournament which includes teams from the Berkshire League and Naugatuck Valley League.

Eastern Connecticut Conference
Dates:
Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: Killingly High
Tournament seeds
Tournament finals: Expected to begin Saturday at 3 p.m.

Defending champion: Killingly
At stake: Winner of the tournament wins the league championship. The ECC also crowns three divisional champions based on points earned during the dual meet season and at the league championship meet.
Of note: Killingly has won the last three ECC Tournaments. … Wrestling begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the quarterfinals scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wrestling begins Saturday with the semifinals at 10 a.m. The consolation finals and fifth place bouts will begin at 1:10 p.m.

Central Connecticut Conference
Date:
Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: Simsbury High
Tournament finals: Expected to begin around 4:30 p.m.
Streaming:  Simsbury events are broadcast over the NFHS network. You can watch the CCC finals here with Ken Pera and Ernie Goodwin with the play by play.
Defending champion: Simsbury (Large school), Bristol Eastern (Small school)
At stake: In 2020, the league held a pair of 16-team tournaments. This year, 20 teams are expected to attend. Bristol Eastern, Bristol Central, Glastonbury and Hall have declined the invitation to compete this weekend. The last time there was one CCC tournament in 2018 and Southington was the winner.
Of note: The tournament will be a single-elimination tournament through the quarterfinals.

FCIAC (Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference)
Dates:
Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: New Canaan
Tournament finals: Expected to begin Saturday at 4 p.m.

Defending champion: Danbury
At stake: Winner of the tournament wins the league championship.
Of note: Wrestling begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. with quarterfinals on Friday night. Wrestling begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals. The consolation finals and fifth place bouts begin at 2 p.m. … The tournament is known as the Joe Sikorski FCIAC Wrestling Tournament.  … Tickets are $10 and will not be sold at the door. North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC)
Dates:
Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: Rockville High in Vernon
Tournament finals: Expected to begin Saturday around 4 p.m.
Streaming: Unknown. Rockville does have a YouTube stream.
Defending champion: Suffield/Windsor Locks
At stake: Teams earn one point for each dual meet win and a half point point for each team they beat at the league championship meet so the league title will be on the line. Stafford (6-1 NCCC) and Portland (5-1 NCCC) had the best regular season records in the league and can win the league championship by winning the tournament. Canton (5-2) can win a share of the league title if they win the tournament and Stafford and Portland each finish third or lower.
Of note: Suffield/Windsor Locks was the first co-op team to win the NCCC tournament and league title in 2020.

Southwest Conference (SWC)
Dates:
Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: New Milford
Tournament finals: Expected to begin Saturday around 5:15 p.m.
Streaming: unknown
Defending champion: New Milford
At stake: Winner of the tournament wins the league championship.
Of note: The Green Wave have won the tournament a record 16 times. The next closest team with SWC titles is Bethel with three. …
Wresting begins at 8:30 a.m. with semifinals expected to commence at 1 p.m. Consolation finals expected to begin at 3:45 p.m.

Berkshire Valley Tournament
Dates:
Saturday, Feb. 12
Location: Gilbert School, Winsted
Streaming: Unknown. Gilbert events are broadcast on the NFHS network.
Defending champion: Gilbert
At stake: Due to a variety of circumstances including COVID and no wrestling a year ago, no team in the league has a full 14-person roster so the tournament should move right along. Some weight classes will be in round-robin formats. Nonnewaug (7-17, 3-0 BL) will win the Berkshire League championship as long as they finish third or higher among the four BL teams.
Of note: Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. The seventh annual tournament includes teams from the Berkshire League and Naugatuck Valley League. … No NVL team has won the tournament yet although Derby was second in 2015, the first year of the tournament.
