With three champions, No. 11 Coast Guard wins Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 20, 2021 – Coast Guard’s Tony Ulaszek was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and No. 11 Coast Guard had three champions and 10 wrestlers place in the top three as the Bears easily won the Doug Parker Invitational Saturday at Springfield College.

The Bears won with 162.5 points and had a total of 13 wrestlers place in the top six. Centenary was second with 99 points and no other team had more than six top six finishes.

Fifth-seeded Ulaszek won the 149 pound championship by pinning all four of his opponents including teammate and the second seed Noah Caskey in 2:56 in the championship match as the Bears took the top two spots at 149. Ulaszek won all four of his matches with a pin. He won in 43 seconds, 1:27 and then just 13 seconds to reach the final.

Top-seeded Paul Detwiler was the 184 pound champion after pinning Jett Tancsik from Rhode Island College in 2:39, his second pin of the day and top-seeded Coy Spooner won at 197 pounds after a hard fought 2-1 decision over Darby McLaughlin from Western New England.

Unseeded Chase Randall took second at 133 pounds with three wins on the day.Sixth-seeded Joe Chapman was the runner up at 157 pounds and unseeded Tim Ganuncio placed second at 285 pounds as both won three matches before falling the championship match.

Trinity College senior Kevin Lyskawa and freshman Chris Perry each won championships in their respective weight classes at the Doug Parker Invitational.

Lyskawa rattled off four-straight wins and took home the 165 pound crown in a 10-1 majority decision over Messiah’s Zach Needles while Perry’s four victories and decision win over Springfield’s Chris Trelli in the 141 pound division earns him his first ever collegiate tournament victory.

The Bantams placed 11thout of 14 schools finishing with a 55½ points.

Berlin native Nick Arborio of Western New England University won an individual championship at 133 to lead Western to a third place finish. 

Arborio opened the day against Plymouth where he had a dominating first match defeating his opponent 24-7 to earn his first tech fall of the day. He then went onto the next round where he defeated Williams in a 19-8 major decision. Arborio maintained his momentum into his third match of the day with an 11-4 decision over Coast Guard to advance to the first-place match. Arborio was set to face another Coast Guard wrestler who had to forfeit giving Arborio the first-place victory at 133 pounds.
