Roundup: Sacred Heart’s Sandquist wins first collegiate tournament

Sacred Heart freshman Madison Sanquist won her first collegiate tournament at the Adrian Open at Adrian College in Michigan. Sandquist went undefeated with three pins to win at 143 pounds. She won with pins in 4:37, 4:13 and a 29 second pin of Stephanie Floor of Gannon in the championship match.

Sandquist helped Sacred Heart earn 25 points and finish eighth in the tournament. She is now 5-1 on the year with three pins.

Wesleyan was fourth at the Roger Williams Invitational in Providence, which was won by Johnson & Wales. Aaron Goldman (157) and Marco Gaita (174) won their weight classes for the Cardinals. Four wrestlers won titles for Johnson & Wales including Berlin’s Ryan DeVivo, who prevailed at 184 pounds. The Wildcats were first in a field of 10 teams.

Tolland’s Michael Angers of Castelton State won at 165 pounds at the Roger Williams Invitational in Providence.

Three former Danbury wrestlers won medals at the Wolfpack Open on Sunday. Ryan Jack (141) and A.J. Kovacs (157) each finished second while Jakob Camacho (125) finished third.

Simsbury’s Ty Finn of Virginia Tech finished fifth at 157 pounds. He went 5-1 in the tournament with two pins and three one-point victories. He placed in his second consecutive collegiate tournament.

Sacred Heart’s Robert Hetherman was fourth at 184 at the Bearcat Open. He went 3-2.

Three former Connecticut high school wrestlers competed for their respective collegiate teams at the Racich Rumble at Ursinus College. Foran’s Ethan Edmondson (174) went 2-2 for WPI while Newtown’s Fritz Maurath (157) went 3-2 for John Hopkins. New Canaan’s Justin Mastroianni (149) went 2-2 for New York University, which won the tournament.
