DANBURY, January 20, 2020 – The defending New England champion Danbury High wrestling team had six pins in a 49-21 win over Mt. Anthony Union of Bennington, Vt., in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day match between the two New England rivals.
No. 1 Danbury (7-0) received pins from Kai O’Dell (113), Tyler Johnson (126), Jesse Patton (152), Daniel Camacho (160), Tyrell Jones (182) and D.J. Donovan (220).
The match began at 160 pounds and it was tied 12-12 after four matches. D.J. Donovan (220) got a pin for Danbury and Jordan Agosto (285) outlasted Mt. Anthony’s Hayden Gaudette, 3-1, to give Danbury a 21-12 lead.
A 10-5 victory from Mt. Anthony’s Jordon Ross at 106 over Danbury’s Anthony Hacker cut the lead to 21-15. But Danbury won the next four matches with pins from O’Dell and Johnson, a major decision from Kevin Pina (120) and a hard-fought 4-1 victory from Matt Lucas at 132 pounds to take a commanding 40-15 lead.
It is just the second time in the series that began in 2005 that Danbury has won in back-to-back seasons. The 28-point win was the largest for Danbury in the series. The Patriots lead the series, 13-7. The Hatters won two straight over Mt. Anthony in dual meets in 2005 and 2006.
