Johnson & Wales beats Coast Guard to win fourth straight NEWA Duals title

PROVIDENCE, R.I., January 19, 2020 — Coast Guard finished second in the annual New England Wrestling Association’s (NEWA) Duals tournament on Sunday in Providence in a 30-8 loss to defending champion Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats went 4-0 to win the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

The Wildcats got much needed bonus points by winning the first two matches by pin to jump out to a quick 12-0 lead.JWU would win the first five matches to take a 22-0 lead en route to the 30-8 win in a match between two archrivals which saw each team penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Five Connecticut wrestlers earned All-Tournament status. Castleton State’s Mitchell LaFlam (Lebanon), Plymouth State’s Angelo Folino (New Hartford), Southern Maine’s Zach Thompson (Bristol), Roger Williams’ Brett Leonard (New Milford) and Western New England University’s Nick Arborio (Berlin) were recognized on the All-Tournament team.
