FAIRFIELD, Dec. 18, 2019 — Fairfield Warde had school record 11 pins in a single match as they opened the 2019-20 season with a 69-9 win over Greenwich Wednesday in FCIAC action. Four of the 11 pins came in the first period.
Nine Ledyard wrestlers came up with victories as the Colonels beat Waterford, 48-28, to give rookie head coach Allyn Quibble his first coaching victory. Quibble, a two-time State Open champion who graduated from Ledyard in 2001, had served as an assistant coach under Steve Bilheimer for several years. Bilheimer stepped down after last season. He had two coaching stints with Ledyard (2002-08, 2011-19) and led the Colonels to nine state titles – 2 in Class L, six in Class M and one in Class S.
First-year head coach Mike Jacobs earned his first career victory as Fairfield Ludlowe beat Norwalk, 54-30, in FCIAC action. … Xavier had six pins in a 75-6 win over Fairfield Prep. … Pins from Tristyn D’Anielo (152), Matt Merrigan (160) and Christian Calero (170) were key as Platt outlasted East Hartford, 42-36 in a CCC bout.
Three-time defending Class L champion Bristol Eastern opened the season with a 61-15 win over Avon, snapping Avon’s 26-match winning streak dating back to the 2018 season. … Danbury opened the season with a 73-6 win over Ridgefield, extending their FCIAC winning streak to 417 matches. The last FCIAC team to beat Danbury in a dual meet was Greenwich in January 1986.
Simsbury had eight pins, including three in under 30 seconds, as the Trojans opened the season with a 68-9 win over Enfield. … Four pins helped Maloney win their opener with a 43-28 win over Newington …. Brunswick had pins in three of the five final matches to beat Iona Prep, 38-30 on Wednesday in Greenwich in Dann Gym. The Bruins (5-1) received key pins from Alex Burdick (182), Clayton Ostrover (220) and Enzo Vera (106) to secure the victory. … The first Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll of the season will be distributed the week of December 30.
