The Portland High wrestling team is taking advantage of their new conference home. The Highlanders improved to 2-0 overall and in the North Central Connecticut Conference with a 60-18 victory over Coventry on Monday night.
The Highlanders, which joined NCCC as an associate member in wrestling this winter, will wrestle a full schedule against each of the league’s eight schools and will wrestle in the NCCC conference championships in February. Portland, which is a member of the Shoreline Conference, has competed as an independent program since 2006 when the Highlanders left the Charter Oak Conference. Portland last won a conference title in 2003 when they won a COC championship.
Portland (2-0, 2-0 NCCC) beat Rockville on opening night, 51-24, in their first NCCC match. On Monday night, Griffin Shafer, Mack Toomey and Matt Tracy each had pins in Portland’s victory over Coventry.
Hand and Guilford also improved to 2-0 with victories on Monday night. Hand had four pins in a 40-30 victory over Shelton. Guilford had three pins in a 57-15 decision over New Haven.
