Trumbull’s Michael Longo earns All-American honors in Junior Greco Roman

FARGO, North Dakota, July 19 – Trumbull’s Michael Longo won five matches to earn All-American honors at the USA Wrestling Junior National tournament in Greco Roman.

Longo (100 pounds) went 5-2 in the tournament and beat Carson Nishida of Illinois by technical fall with an 11-1 victory in 4:28. Longo won his first two matches scoring a combined 39 points.

He beat Arkansas’ Tristian Stafford in his tournament opener, 27-17 in 5:57. In his next match, Longo bat North Dakota’s Noah Savageau, 12-2 in 2:44.

After dropping an 11-1 decision to Illinois’ Daniel Sheen in the quarterfinals in 2:13, Longo won two straight matches before falling to Wisconsin’s Kaleb Casey in the consolation semifinals, 11-0, in 57 seconds.

Trumbull’s Matthew Ryan (138) won six matches but still fell short of earning All-American honors by finishing in the top eight. Ryan (6-2) won his first match before losing. He rallied to win five straight consolation round bouts with two technical falls.

Ryan was eliminated with an 11-1 loss to Florida’s Breti Reyna, 11-1 in 1:46.

Several other Connecticut wrestlers picked up victories in the Junior National Greco Roman tournament. Middletown’s Kalil Shabazz went 2-2 at 126 pounds while Bethel’s Eamon-Antonio Toland Matos went 3-2 at 145 pounds. Suffield’s Hunter Adams (170), Terryville’s Caleb Leclerc (138) and Milford’s C.J. Shea (120) each went 1-2.

It was the final day of the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals and U16 Nationals — formerly known as the Cadet Nationals for athletes ages 15 to 16. The Junior Nationals are for current high school students.

Longo was the fifth Connecticut wrestler to earn All-American honors at the tournament.
