AKRON, Ohio, June 2 – Trumbull native Cross Cannone and Easton’s Emmett LiCastri participated in the USA Wrestling U-23 men’s freestyle World Team trials at the University of Akron.
Winners of each weight class earned a spot on Team USA for the U23 Senior World Championships in Hungary in October along with earning a spot for the Olympic team trials in April 2020.
Cannone, a three-time Division III All-American and a 2018 NCAA Division III national champion at Wartburg College in Iowa, went 6-2 in the tournament and fell two wins shy of finishing in the top eight and earning a medal.
Cannone won his first match of the tournament before dropping a 11-0 tech fall decision to Justin McCoy of the Cavalier Wrestling Club. Then, Cannone won five straight bouts with a pair of tech falls including a 10-0 win over Joshua Finesilver of Blue Blood Wrestling Club in 2:18.
But Kenan Carter of Virginia Beach Training Center eliminated Cannone with a 8-4 victory in the consolation bracket.
Easton’s Emmett LiCastri, who just finished his junior season at Franklin and Marshall, wrestled at 74 kg and went 1-2 in the tournament.
LiCastri had his first winning season with Franklin and Marshall last winter, going 19-13 and 8-7 in the EIWA.
Cannone complete his four years at Wartburg and was co-MVP of the American Rivers Conference. Cannone finished the year 31-1 and third at this year’s NCAA Division III tournament at 157 pounds. He was second in 2017 and won the national title in 2018 at 149 pounds. Cannone finished with 118 career collegiate victories.
