Henckel wins title at Reno World Championship tournament

RENO, Nevada, April 7 – Southbury’s William Henckel went undefeated and won his weight class at the 2019 Reno World Championship tournament. Henckel, representing Team Tugman, won the 12-and-under division at 100 pounds.

Henckel went 5-0 in the tournament with three first period pins and a technical fall. In the championship match, he beat Joseph Antonio (Butcher Shop Boyz) of Long Beach, California, 6-3.

Tied at 3-3 in the third period after an Antonio takedown, Henckel escaped with 1:09 remaining to take the lead and got a takedown with 31 seconds left to secure the championship.

Two of the wrestlers than Henckel beat on his way to the championship ending up placing. Henckel pinned Branson John of Clovis, California, in the quarterfinals (0:48) and pinned Angelo Posada of San Diego in the semifinals (1:02). Posada finished fifth and John finished sixth.

It’s been a big year for Henckel, Last April 2018, he competed with a team of Americans at the 2018 Tallinn Open in Finland and went 6-0 to win his weight class (47 kg or 103 pounds) in the 2005-06 age group in freestyle beating several Russians and a wrestler from Finland. He was third in the Greco-Roman tournament, losing one match by a point.

He won a New England title at 106 pounds in the middle school division in early March.
