Wesleyan’s Murillo upsets No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class

Wesleyan’s Zach Murillo

MIDDLETOWN, February 10 – Southington senior Zack Murillo beat the top-ranked Division III wrestler in the country in his weight class (125 pounds) as Wesleyan University split two dual meets on Sunday.

The Cardinals beat New England College, 34-5 but dropped a tough 21-17 decision to Southern Maine to finish 5-9 on the season.

Murillo was one of five Wesleyan wrestlers honored on Senior Day. But the biggest cheer came after Murillo upset No. 1 ranked Peter Del Gallo of Southern Maine, 3-2. Murillo (23-7, 5 pins) successfully defended a last-second single leg takedown attempt to secure the big win.

The Cardinals return to mat this weekend at the NEWA Futures Tournament. The NCAA Division III Regionals will be February 23-24 at Johnson and Wales.
