CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, January 1, 2019 – Wartburg College senior Cross Cannone of Trumbull was named the American Rivers Conference male athlete of the week for all sports – not just wrestling.
Cannone, the defending NCAA Division III champion at 157 pounds, is ranked No. 1 in the nation. He picked up another two victories as No. 2 Wartburg beat NCAA Division II No. 25 Colorado Mesa, 23-19 and then No. 12 North Central, 41-3, at last week’s Desert Duals.
Cannone beat Colorado-Mesa’s Payton Tawater, 8-2 and beat North Central’s Rafael Roman by a tech fall, 15-0. Cannone improves to 13-0 on the year and extended his winning streak to 47 consecutive matches.
Cannone now has 28 career tech falls, which is tied for second with Landon Williams on Wartburg’s career record book.
Wartburg (6-0) will seek their 12th NWCA National Duals title this weekend at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville this weekend.
