MIDDLETOWN, January 11, 2018 – Kali Shabazz (132), Elijah Cyr (113), Jacob Toth (195) and Jonah Smikle (285) each went 3-0 on the evening as No. 10 Middletown won three matches on Friday night to improve to 12-2 on the year.
The Dragons outlasted host Guilford, 37-35, beat No. 5 Trumbull, 43-30 and beat No. 12 Ledyard, 50-24. Cyr beat defending State Open Travis Longo of Trumbul, 4-2 in their bout at 113 pounds.
Middletown and Guilford each had seven victories in their match but the Dragons had four pins to two for Guilford. Trumbull (20-4) came away with victories over Ledyard and Guilford while Ledyard’s lone win came in a 37-36 decision over Guilford thanks to four pins and Tyler Miller’s one-point victory over Keldon Larose (132) by a 6-5 margin.
No. 3 Fairfield Warde had nine pins against Fitch and seven against Amity as the Mustangs (8-1) easily beat Fitch-Groton, 69-9 and Amity, 54-15.
At Loch Sheldrake, New York, three Connecticut wrestlers are in the quarterfinals of the 17th annual Eastern States Classic at Sullivan Community College. Danbury’s Ryan Jack (126) and Kyle Fields (132) are in the quarterfinals along with New Canaan’s Tyler Sung (145), Southington’s Jacob Cardozo (138) and Xavier’s Michael Rapuano (106).
Danbury’s Montez Osbey (195), D.J. Donovan (220) and Jordan Agosto (285) are still alive in the consolation bracket along with New Canaan’s Christian Sibbett (160) and Xavier’s Dylan Souza (170) and James Lunt (138).
The No. 1 Hatters are in third place in the tournament behind Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Seminary, the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, with 59½ points and Hilton High (50½), the top-ranked Division I team in New York’s high school rankings.
Jack is the No. 1 seed at 126 and has won his first two matches. Fields (132) is 3-0 along with Sung (145). Sung had a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Raymond Costa of Cold Springs in the second round of the tournament.
Cardozo is 2-0 with one pin at 138 while Rapuano has won both of his matches by pin.
Wrestlers from Danbury, Xavier, Southington and New Canaan are participating in the tournament that has attracted eight of the top 10 Division I high school teams in New York State and six of the top 10 Division II high school teams in New York.
Wrestling begins at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday morning with the semifinals at 1 p.m. and the championship round beginning at 4:15 p.m. The tournament is being broadcast live on Flo Wrestling.com
