Danbury is unanimous choice for No. 1 in first Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll

Danbury is the unanimous choice as the No. 1 wrestling team in the state in the first Connecticut Wrestling Online top 10 poll of the season.

The Hatters (3-0) received all 17 votes from a panel of coaches and media members from across the state. It is the 24th consecutive week that Danbury has been ranked No. 1 in the poll. Newtown was the last team other than Danbury to be ranked No. 1 in the 2016 preseason poll.

Undefeated Bristol Eastern (8-0), which has won 44 consecutive dual meets dating back to the 2016 season, is ranked No. 2 with Southington coming in at No. 3. Eastern, the two-time defending Class L champions, beat Southington, 39-34 in the opening match of the season for both squads in December.

The Blue Knights (5-1) have won the Lancer Invitational in Waterford, beat Mt. Anthony, Vt., to win their own Blue Knight Duals and finished sixth at the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Invitational last week.

Fairfield Warde (6-1) is ranked No. 4 with Simsbury coming in at No. 5. Warde won the Guilford Tournament earlier this year and their only loss has come to No. 1 Danbury. Simsbury won the Battle of Wethersfield tournament and was second behind defending New England champion Ponagansett, R.I., at the Frank Chaves Invitational last week.

Trumbull (13-2), defending Class M champion Foran-Milford, Xavier-Middletown (4-1), Middletown and Avon round out the top 10.

Trumbull’s only two defeats have come to No. 4 Fairfield Warde and No. 2 Bristol Eastern. Foran (14-2) has lost to Trumbull and Eastern while Middletown’s lone defeat came at the hands of No. 5 Simsbury.

Simsbury (2-0) returns to the top 10 for the first time since December 2015 with Middletown (8-1) returning to the top 10 for the first time since February 2016.

Avon (7-0) returns to the top 10 for the first time since December 2006 when the Falcons were ranked No. 6 in the state.

This is the second year that Connecticut Wrestling Online is conducting the top 10 poll. The Norwich Bulletin conducted the poll for 34 years from 1985 through 2017.
