Danbury, East Haven, Griswold, Simsbury pick up victories

Berlin’s Nathan Orde controls Platt’s John Cerrone in a match at 132 pounds Wednesday night in Berlin. Orde won by pin as the Redcoats topped Platt, 42-36.

EAST HAVEN, Dec. 19, 2018 – East Haven is continuing their climb to the top of the Southern Connecticut Conference. The Yellowjackets beat Hand — which went 17-3 a year ago — on opening night, 42-24. On Saturday, they finished a strong third behind Danbury and Avon at the Plainville Invitational.

On Wednesday, East Haven improved to 2-0 with an impressive 43-22 victory over Amity, who won the SCC B Division a year ago. “We’ve been building to this little by little,” East Haven coach Mark Tolla told GameTimeCT’s David Phillips. “We’ve been increasing the technical ability of the kids and now we can compete with the top teams.”

Defending State Open champion Danbury beat FCIAC rival Fairfield Warde, 45-24. Five pins and a technical fall helped the Hatters (2-0) stay in control.

Danbury dominated the lower weight classes by taking the first seven bouts of the match up to 145 pounds. Warde did better in the upper weight classes with Joe Gjinaj (195) outlasting Danbury’s Montez Osbey in a very competitive bout at 195 pounds thanks to a second period escape.

Danbury, New Canaan and Xavier will challenge themselves this weekend by traveling to the Beast of the East tournament in Newark, Delaware.

Berlin got pins in three of the final four matches to earn their first victory of the season with a 42-36 win over Platt High at the Jim Day Gymnasium in Berlin.

Trailing by six points, Nathan Orde (132), Tyler Barber (138) and Daniel Veleas (145) came away with pins to win the match for the Redcoats (1-1).

It was the first win for Berlin head coach Peter Veleas, who coached for more 19 years at Terryville and leading the Kangaroos to 230 wins, two Berkshire League titles and three top three finishes in Class S.

Griswold had seven pins as the Wolverines beat Windham High for the first time since 2011 with a 45-32 victory over Windham in ECC action. Four of the pins came in the first period.

Brunswick (7-1) beat Hamden Hall, 49-25 and Wilbraham-Monson, 60-21 in prep school action on Wednesday. Jackson Wolfram, Luke Schlank, Chris Perry, Alex Burdick, Harry Fett, Dylan Reynolds, Clayton Ostrow, and Timmy Saunders all recorded pins against Wilbraham. Perry and Fett also earned pins against Hamden Hall.
